Congratulations! You have gotten engaged and are anxious to start planning for your wedding! It’s all very exciting and at times will be overwhelming, but trust us, you can get through this. However, to do so while still maintaining a bit of sanity, please, please, please set a budget for your wedding! We can not stress the importance of this enough.
Sit down with your significant other and talk about how much money you can realistically spend on your wedding day. Are the two of you paying for everything? Is a family member helping with the cost? Have a discussion (or many) about it and figure it out!
Once you have that magic number, talk about what is most important to each of you about the day and how you want to spend the money. Do you have your eye on a specific venue, photographer, caterer or Dj? Don’t forget the little expenses, details and other things that can pop up. If necessary, make a spreadsheet, get a wedding planning book, write it on the wall, whatever. Just write it down and stick to it!
We advise that when you reach out to a vendor, there are 2 really important questions to ask. #1: Are they available on your wedding date? If they are not, then conversation over, no time wasted. #2: Ask them what their services cost. If they can’t give you a specific number without more details, ask them how much most people typically spend with them or for a range of pricing. This will give you an idea of what you will be spending. Have in your mind what you are looking for, because many vendors pricing will vary depending on how much/how many/etc.
When you are calculating what things will cost, don’t forget to factor in taxes and fees and leave yourself a little cushion for unexpected surprises. At the end of the day, remember that its your big day and you should enjoy it as much as possible, but don’t put yourself into mountains of debt for it. The future is still ahead of you!
